Three years. With Facebook and Ravelry, I'm not sure why anyone would even NEED a blog any more. But, I'm going to start posting stuff and see what happens.

Let's see - in the last 3 years

L is still doing bits and pieces on the house - staining trim and windows, and doing a lot of landscaping and gardening. It all looks great - I can't believe the patience he has for doing this, and doing a lot of the standard house maintenance stuff too. I understand now that the house will never be "done". That part would drive me crazy.

About three years ago, I broke my wrist in a fall. In a yarn store. Fortunately, it was not a complicated break. It was complicated by insurance and legal issues, but it's all done now.

About six months ago, I took a terrible fall at work and "blew out" my knee. Dislocated knee joint, ripped the medial collateral ("inside" edge of knee), the ACL and the PCL. Was off work for three months, and I'm wearing a brace for the longterm. Whatever can heal, probably has by now. We have considered enclosing me in bubble wrap.

In January, my office relocated to downtown. This is actually an easier commute for me, and try as I might to hate the new place, it's really lovely.

Daughter got engaged. Wedding planned for next year.

Joey is now 12 and Eiko is 3. Joey got very cozy with me when I was stuck on the couch for a couple months. I think we might have lost him last summer, but he came back. L still struggles with him occasionally at feeding time, but he's up to 14-15 lbs. Still light for him, but he'll never get to 16 lbs again.

Knitting continues on of course and the Ravelry page shows what I've worked on. Lately, I've been entranced though by the crocheted animals of Heidi Bears. I've finished the hippo and am now working on the frog.

Maybe when I figure out the new gewgaws, etc. I'll post some pix.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-17649185731672347132010-03-30T22:28:00.001-07:002010-03-30T22:28:50.983-07:00Small FO - a sign of spring
After finishing the Swallowtail, a good girl would pull out an old UFO and get to work on it. Well, I don't know that girl.

I'd been looking at Brandywine for several weeks. The designer is donating 75% of the pattern proceeds to Haitian relief. The shawl has clean, geometric lines which always appeal to me. I downloaded the pattern and pulled out some stash yarn (yay for me!). I had maybe 5 or 6 hours into it, before I realized that there was an error in it. Big, ugly error. The kind of error that instantly sucked out any enthusiasm I had for the project.

Wow. Decide to make something, get materials, make it, finish it, wear it. What a concept!

This is the most excellent Swallowtail shawl. Something that has been on my To-Do list for several years. Started it at Madrona with yarns from there, and finished it just under a month later. This took less than one skein each of the multi and the solid, both Crystal Palace Mini Mochi. The yarn IS single-ply and splitty and I wouldn't use it again for a beaded project as the tiny beading hook just shreds the fiber. However, I do love the look of it. I decided to use beads instead of the designed nupps because I was very concerned about running out of the solid. I probably had enough for 4-6 more rows, though.

I figure if I can't get excited about them in the honeymoon phase, it is NOT going to get better. So, I started this instead, which I *love*.
This actually is pretty close to Kelly green, which seems appropriate given the holiday tomorrow. I also ordered the Trieste shawl which looks like a fairly easy pattern, also done from the tip up.
God knows, I haven't stopped knitting; it's just all over there. There's a lot of hats and baby stuff and for some reason, I got into a lace period. You can see my projects and junk here.
18 months later, we are almost done, and you can see the entire journey here. THAT'S where my blogging time has gone.

As far as knitting, well, I'm headed out in a couple days to Madrona for the 4-day retreat / classes / shopping / drinking wine in the lobby til the horse cuts you off.
I used the last of the beads from the pink hat to make the eyes (or, I guess it would be eye sockets) for the first set of skulls. I think RED ones would be awesome, but I'm trying to use up what I have.

Finally, a bit of STUNNING news -
My daughter found my wedding ring, which I thought was lost forever about 3 months ago. It is a little snug right now for my ring finger, so I'd been wearing on my pinky finger. Obviously, it's a little big for that. I noticed it gone right after returning from grocery shopping. I called the store but of course they hadn't seen it. It is not a large stone, but it's conceivable that someone still might have seen it on the floor and helped themselves. Or, it could have been swept up in the trash. I also called the restaurant - we had treated ourselves to brunch that Sunday morning. In fact it might have been Father's Day and that was why we went out, as DH usually cooks a big breakfast on Sunday morning and he "got the day off." I also did a cursory check around the car, with no luck. Once we started tearing up the yard end of June - details on the remodel blog - I knew that if it HAD fallen off then, it was hopelessly gone - it was needle in a haystack time, and soil removed from one place was being replaced somewhere else. Turns out it never left the house. She was looking for her ipod headset and went rummaging under my computer desk and there it was. Whatever frustrations there may be with a no-longer-teen-but-still-adolescent daughter, they were all forgotten for a while when she called me so excited I couldn't make out what she was saying at first. Life is good.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-47737469175247005422008-08-17T00:14:00.000-07:002008-08-17T00:32:12.395-07:00Beaded Cable Hat - AFOI'm about halfway through the ribbing at bottom of this cable beaded hat.

A dear friend led me to a much cleaner way to add beads with a tiny tiny crochet hook. Then, talking to Mom, it turns out she had a PILE of these tiny hooks with many duplicates so she gave me almost a dozen of them!

Then on Ravelry, I saw something about Hat Attack and the Binary Cable Hat. This caught my attention because DH is a programmer. Rav info is here: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/binary-cable-hat And there is a beaded option for 100 or so, up to nearly 1000 beads to attach to hat. I'm definitely not interested in putting 1000 beads in, but there's 80 in the hat I'm just finishing, so 100 wouldn't be bad at all.

In other news, we have survived the 3rd consecutive day of 100+ degree (F) weather. That's too damn much heat for our gentle, rusty constitutions here in the rain capital. Tomorrow is supposed to be more of the same then maybe down to 80ish on Monday.

In view of that, it's hard for me to believe I'm knitting at all, but I'm very close to finishing that hat. As far as Ravelympics, I signed up for WIP Wrestling and haven't touched either project. I refuse to have a prefelted bag of mammoth proportions resting in my lap in this weather.

Oh, and sort of related. DH and I went to Costco today to pick up the sewing machine on sale. He was as excited as I was, and couldn't wait to open it up, and play with all the pieces. It will be good for basic mending, hemming, doing linings for felted bags, etc. There are some decorative stitches as well, but this will be a basic household accessory and not the beginning of a new hobby, complete with requisite stash, etc. I can't manage the stuff I have. But I DO have a pair of jeans that need about 5 inches taken off the legs....Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-36358409791768967462008-08-14T22:47:00.001-07:002008-08-14T22:57:09.807-07:00Too Hot to Knit...
Haven't posted here for a while - been quite busy *due to this*. The hat is actually quite large. I started with a provisional cast-on to pick up for the lining as pattern suggests. But it's already nearly double-thickness because of the stranding. I do. I love the "bang for the buck" with color, etc.

But, I'm a little concerned over the uneven stitches. They are not puckering, and I don't have floats because I use the method espoused by Philosopher's Wool, so yarn is caught every other stitch.

Will soaking and a little gentle "guidance" during blocking resolve this? Using black and white, there is bound to be some view-through and I'm not so worried about that.

The other frustration is, I got complacent by the time of the third row of skulls, and made the same error 4 times, once in each panel repeat, because I really didn't pay attention to the chart. I tried laddering it back, but with 6 rows x 2 strands, trying to minimize floats and the idea that I would have to do it *4* times, it truly was faster to just frog back the rounds and do it over. I'm back to where I was, and I see I made the VERY SAME mistake. This time, it stays.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-73137702079859465652008-08-01T22:43:00.001-07:002008-08-01T22:48:10.076-07:00We Be Pirates
I bought the yarn for this MONTHS ago. Cool!

I'm leaning toward the ladybugs because they are, ironically, gender neutral. I completely spaced the other meaning of frogs - how weird is that? I found some adorable little hippo buttons, perfect match for the pale green, but there's only two of them - found in a sidewalk sale at fabric store. Drat!

Next issue, booties. I am so annoyed with the bootie pattern (ironically called, "------------'s Perfect Booties") because they so are not. The cast on number is wrong, the directions are wrong. If you do 3 M1's between markers, you are NOT going to have the same number between the markers on next row. If anyone had beta tested this pattern, this would not have slipped through.

I found a fairly basic pattern, knit flat. I improvised by changing the body of bootie to seed stitch instead of what was called for - Quaker stitch? - K 3 rows, P3 rows to match the cuffs, bands and collar on the sweater. There is a little 4-stitch cable on top of bootie - I'm changing that to the 4-stitch cable on the sweater.

The short rows are not looking right, and when I took a closer look, I wasn't even using a #4 but the same #7 used on sweater. So, speaking of frogs, there I go. I will cast on again when I get done here.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-30314720904451391472008-07-22T23:00:00.000-07:002008-07-22T23:06:47.900-07:0095% FO

The yellow baby sweater is done, except for the buttons. Sometimes multi-grain hot cereal, or pancakes, or little appetizer quiches. "Citrus salad", a jar of orange and grapefruit slices in juice, has become a Sunday morning standard. Three link sausages, two for DH, one for me, DD declines. Sometimes eggs, sometimes not. And occasionally, he gets creative:

He modified a recipe he found in a cookbook. The original contained fennel. I don't think I'd like fennel, because I can't stand black licorice. Or ouzo (grin). The following is a guideline more than a recipe. Finely chop up misc veggies, about half a cup total for each mushroom. He used up stuff we already had in the fridge - some veggies which were, uh, past their prime - celery, onion, bell pepper, and the stems of the portobellos. Saute' veggies in a small bit of oil. Although he didn't, you could use some garlic. He forgot the sun-dried tomatoes, I'll bet that would have been good. Very lightly oil the caps of the mushrooms. Place mushrooms, cap side down. Fill each with the sauteed veggies, top with some shredded cheese (we already had mozzarella). Broil. Serve on bed of arugula. There is 1.5 left, and I think it will get put on a piece of ciabatta toast for breakfast tomorrow. Yum!

OKC - trying to chart an old pattern for a smocked-style baby blanket. I was having a terrible time reading through the narrative instructions. I'll insert a link and photo later. Right now, there's not enough to photograph, but you can find it on Ravelry - I think it's called "Diamond and Smocked Cover".

Off to a movie, with tea and cookie, while DD fixes dinner and starts prep work for meals for the whole frigging week! First sock was done 18 months ago. I hadn't even started the second sock. I finally pulled it out last weekend and got started on it. Tuesday morning, when I left for my marathon day of appointments and busses, I was at where the blue line is. I am stunned by how much I got done because I am just not a sock person. I think. I might be going through another flirtation right now, but it's just a crush - I'll get over it. I always do.

I took the big green bag to work on during commute. I expected that might be inconvenient, and it was. But I got my 10 rounds done for today. I figure if I do 5 rounds on this first, then I can work on something else. There are 100 rounds total, and I have about 46 now. At round 90, I need to attach some hardware, so I better find it or order it pronto. I'll add an updated pix later if I can get one before dark.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-27553828820427960722008-05-01T20:17:00.000-07:002008-05-02T07:00:15.955-07:00When Reason Abandons Me...How many times have I tried socks? My mother has made 100's of socks. I got my knitting gene from her, but not the sock knitting mutation.

I got 3/4 of the last pair of socks, for DH, completed, but I just could not bring myself to finish the foot and toe. They sat forlornly in a bag at the bottom of the closet, forgotten, except for a few furtive glances of light when I was looking for something else, and found only guilt instead. Finally, I gave the whole mess to Mom. Within 3 days, L was wearing new sox.

I started lime-green mohair sox for DD, for Christmas 2006, same vintage as the ones for DH. These were much larger gauge, mini-cable, 48 stitches, should have been easy to finish. I finished one. Then they went to the bottom of the closet. In the meantime, DD's 3-year fascination with lime green finally ended. Yet she still wants me to finish these sox. I'm not even sure if it would fit her anymore, although her feet couldn't change much from 18 to 20, I would think.

Mom recently made several pairs of socks, with this accordion-y, slouchy pattern. I am fascinated. I want some. More than that, I want to MAKE some. No, wait, lace.

I don't have a car, although DH does. I use public transportation for work, and many errands. No matter what project I'm working, most of them eventually get too large for commute knitting, and changing busses/trains. Socks would not. So, maybe that is what's happening.

I've been craving sock yarn lately, much as one would crave peanut butter cups or fresh raspberries. After a stressful evening yesterday (did you know that parenting does not stop when they are 18? Did you know that?),
I simply HAD to hit an LYS today. HAD to. I gotta get out of Ravelry more oftenRavelry is a complete time-sucker, and I've ignored this blog because of it. Not that anyone ever READS this blog because, you know, I've been ignoring it (grin). I'm gonna try to change that.

I've started and finished several items not on the progress meters at the left. I will try to update those in the next couple of days.

Not much progress on the remodel; we have applied for financing and run into some snags. Apparently, one of the previous mortgage companies filed a lien against the house when the loan was sold on the aftermarket, and never cleared it. That mortgage companies is now out of business. I'm sure these sorts of things happen all the time, but they are frustrating when they are happening to YOU.

Projects - Stained Glass Felted Bag. This is an amazing pattern which you can see and purchase here. I'm very pleased with the way this one turned out:

There are more pix if you want to see them, but I like this one the best.

Currently, there are two main projects. One is another felted bag, the Noni Green Earth Grocery Bag:

The other is the Flower Basket Shawl, from Interweave Knits, done in Kauni. This was in TimeOut for a while, but I'm not sure why, most likely set aside for Christmas crazies. This particular repeat was done 4 times, I think, before I got it right. The jury is still out on the reddish one at the right. I've redone it and frogged that already once this evening, and will try again before bed. It SHOULD work, but maybe trying to fix lace on a city bus isn't the best way to go.

Hopefully, this will get the new habit started. People who blog daily, or 3 x week, wow. I read one in our local paper today that had orange zest !! What ARE these people THINKING? For one thing, oranges were very dear in Ireland when my dad was growing up. It was a very good Christmas if everyone got an orange in their stocking. And this is not rye bread. This is a peasant bread without extra seasonings or spices or seeds. Period.

Anyway, this is our family recipe and you're welcome to it.

4 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking soda
2 tbsp sugar
1 tbsp baking powder
2 tbsp vegetable oil or butter
2/3-1 cup raisins / saltanas
1-1.5 cups buttermilk

NOTES:

The vegetable oil used to be butter, but using oil makes for easier mixing.

There is also some version of this with yogurt instead of buttermilk, but the taste is obviously different.

Some people maintain that the raisins are optional. Mix dry ingredients well, plus the raisins if you believe in them. I do. In separate small bowl, whisk oil into buttermilk. Pour mixture into dry ingredients, and mix well. Dough will be stiff and sticky. Turn dough out onto well-floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes. Shape into a flat round loaf about 1.5 inches thick. Sprinkle with flour. You may want to push in raisins that have migrated to surface. Cut an "X" on top with sharp knife. Bake on cookie sheet for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped. Cool on rack. This was a great little project. A couple days after the green yarn mysteriously disappeared (it has not yet shown up), my LYS called me to let me know they were finally kitting up this sweater; I had bought mine online. I got a second kit and a full skein of the green, using the green bit from second kit to finish the first. However, as you can see, there was plenty of yarn left over anyway. I think a simple roll-brim hat from this would be a nice way to use up the remnants.

I did start the clunky, chunky scarf and it's certainly instant gratification. It still needs a button. It was fun and quick, a couple of days diversion.

I've tried to work on DH's socks, but I just can't get excited about them. Every couple of years I believe the hype about sox and try it, but in a total of maybe 4 pairs done in the last 10 years, only one pair really held my interest - the Fair Isle sox using the pattern from Knitpicks. With the rest of them, it's really more a case of, "Are we there yet?" Please, can't these be done ALREADY?

Finally, what I've been working on this weekend, a Utopia Hat from Smariek Knits. Patterns are available at her Yahoo group. They are generally cable-oriented, some are simple and some like the one on her group home page, are quite elaborate. I did make a minor change on this, reversing the cable direction, just for my own quirky reasons.

Knit ON !!Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8386905439974796152.post-38000299492239959002007-10-02T07:10:00.000-07:002007-10-02T20:24:51.531-07:00Green Yarn, Where Art Thou?I've been working on the Dream In Color Tulip Baby Sweater, and in a week, I have it about 80% done. Body is done plus the edgings around front and bottom. It needs the sleeves and the i-cord tie at the front. However, my little remnant of green yarn, which I need for both sleeves, has disappeared. I haven't looked EVERYplace yet, but we do have an occasional feline thief who runs off with little woolly treasures, especially when he thinks he is not being accorded his due as the Center of the Universe. So, I am putting this project on hold while I wait for that to show up.

I still have DH's denim blue socks OTN, and a headband for a little girl on the bus. However, since I started this, I have not seen her and her mother on the bus at all.

I bought some massively chunky yarn for a 20-stitch scarf on #13 needles. But I'm trying to keep my finishing ratio at 2 for every 1 thing started. You don't know how hard this is - wait, you probably do - as fall approaches and the warm, fuzzy yarns take the place of the cottons, rayons and silks.

I've been in Ravelry for a couple weeks, still learning the ropes, especially the forums. It is a serious enabling machine. O.M.G.Eileenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04508491875542285654noreply@blogger.com0
